Iyengar Yoga

The world renowned Indian yogi BKS Iyengar has developed an active and focused approach to yoga which leads to a thorough understanding of the postures (known by the Indian word ‘asanas’). As people have differing skeletal structures and degrees of flexibility, Iyengar yoga makes use of props and supports such as blocks, belts and blankets so that each person can work in the way which is best suited to them.

There are also different classes for different levels of experience

Foundation Courses introduce, and help you to develop, basic yoga postures. No previous experience is necessary. Our range of drop-in classes complement these courses and are the ideal way to continue your yoga practice after the end of the course.

Foundation classes are an ideal introduction to yoga and a good way to keep your yoga practice going. We offer five classes a week including lunchtimes, evenings and weekend mornings.

General level classes are for those familiar with the Iyengar approach to postures and who have been practising for 1 year or more, and offer the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the asanas and to work on the more challenging postures. There are two classes at this level: one on Thursday evening from 6.00pm to 7.30pm and one on Saturday morning from 9.30am to 11.00am.

Intermediate classes are for those who have been practising in the Iyengar tradition for 2 or more years. The classes includes pranayama breathing techniques as well as dynamic and precise posture work. This class runs on a Friday evening from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

…and there are classes with differing approaches:

Yoga for relaxation is suitable for all levels of experience, with an emphasis on relaxation. This class runs on a Thursday evening from 7.45pm to 9.00pm.

Yoga and Meditation Yoga practice has traditionally been seen as a prelude to sitting meditation. Yoga can help to develop the same sort of awareness, integration and concentration which we cultivate in sitting meditation. Oasis Yoga and Health run meditation and yoga events from time to time, and the Buddhist Centre runs a wide range of meditation classes and courses.
